I was thinking to myself what always struck me about Caravaggio were his colour contrasts. His reds jump. Then we talked about how we saw, learnt, studied these images. Books, printed in the 90’s or before, slides from family holidays or mass produced as souvenirs or TV, cathode tubes where the reds would jump and sfumato was part of the technology.
Today everything is accessible, at your finger tips, you can make a slide show with your mobile phone while sitting on the toilet. It does give us a greater (potential) awareness of the world around us but don’t confuse the image of a painting with the painting. If you’re not sure of the difference try Tinder.
